What we are doing
As the National Statistics Office, the Statistical Institute of Jamaica is collaborating with public, private, and non-governmental organizations to ensure that timely, accurate, and reliable data are available to guide recovery efforts following Hurricane Melissa.
Below are some of the ways our data are helping to improve the lives of affected individuals and support recovery in the hardest hit parishes:
-
Geospatial data guiding response
Geospatial data provided by STATIN is helping organizations plan and coordinate their disaster response efforts more effectively. For example, the Jamaica Baptist Union is using community boundary information from STATIN to coordinate its damage assessments and relief response.
-
Food logistics planning (WCK via Visa Jamaica)
World Central Kitchen (via Visa Jamaica) is using community boundaries provided by STATIN to plan and manage the logistics of food delivery to people in the most affected parishes. Their field teams are assigned and deployed based on these boundaries to ensure efficient distribution.
-
Direct operational support
The Institute has provided the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) with staff to assist with the Initial Damage Assessment (IDA), tablets for data collection and vehicles to transport volunteers. STATIN is also assisting with processing the geospatial data collected by NERGIST.
