Producer Price Index
February 2012

The Producer Price Index (PPI) recorded an increase in output prices for
both industries the Mining & Quarrying
and Manufacturing for the second month of the calendar year 2012. The index
advanced for both industries by 0.2 per cent and 0.5 per cent respectively. The
major groups ‘Bauxite Mining &Alumina Processing’ (0.2 per cent) and ‘Other
Mining & Quarrying (1.3 per cent) were accountable for the 0.2 per cent increase
in the index for the Mining & Quarrying industry. The reason for the increase in
the index for the Manufacturing industry was upward movement in the index of the
major groups, ‘Refined Petroleum Products’ (3.8 per cent) and ‘Food, Beverages &
Tobacco’’ (0.2 per cent).
The fiscal year-to-date (April
2011 February 2012), showed upward
movements in each industry, Mining & Quarrying by 7.7 per cent, while
Manufacturing registered an increase of 5.7 per cent.
The Point- to- Point index
February 2011 to February 2012 rose
by 7.5 per cent for Mining & Quarrying and Manufacturing up by 9.0 per cent. The
major groups that mainly influenced the increase in the index for the
Manufacturing industry for the period were ‘Food, Beverages & Tobacco’ (8.6 per
cent), ‘Refined Petroleum Products’ (22.1 per cent) and ‘Chemicals and Chemical
Products’ (5.0 per cent).
