Methodologies

International standards and best practices are applied to the production of all statistical products produced by STATIN. The methodologies, classifications and standards used to design, collect, process, and disseminate statistical information for each product can be downloaded by clicking on the link below.

Classifications

The use of classification systems for the ordering and presentation of data is beneficial to both the producers and users of statistics as it facilitates data sharing among producers and supports the production of consistent and comparable data for analysis by users.

This page provides information on the most recent statistical classifications that have been developed for Jamaica.

The Jamaica Standard Occupational Classification 2015
Jamaica Industrial Classification (JIC) 2016

The Jamaica Industrial Classification 2005 (JIC 2005) is a classification of economic activities associated with the production of goods and services in Jamaica. JIC 2005 was first published in October 2008 and is modelled off the 3rd revision of the International Standard Industrial Classification (ISIC Rev.3) produced by the United Nations. It replaces the Jamaica Industrial Classification of 1987 (JIC 1987).

The revised JIC features the following:-

  • A broad and detailed Classification Structure
  • Annotations that explain the activities that are included at the class level and point to where related activities are found >
  • Conversion Tables that compare the classification categories and associated codes with those of the previous version of the classification
  • An Alphabetical Index.

The JIC 2005 broad structure orders all economic activity into 17 sections or industries compared with 10 recorded in the previous edition of the JIC.

The detailed classification with over 300 Classes and more than 780 detailed activity groupings is available in the publication.

Data Sources

The Statistical Institute of Jamaica’s Business Register is a structured list of establishments operating in Jamaica. It forms the basis of selection for statistical inquiries and for the calculation of estimates of attributes for the business population.

The Business Register exists primarily for the purpose of supplying a framework for economic surveys conducted by STATIN. It is designed to:

  • Serve as a frame for the selection of establishment surveys

  • Consistently classify statistical reporting units i.e. establishments

  • Serve as a data source for compiling demographic information about businesses.

Administrative data has become an invaluable source of information for the compilation of statistics for the public. The reasons contributing to the increased use of administrative data as opposed to the use of survey data include the following:

  • Declining resources and budget

  • Increasing costs of traditional approaches

  • Increased demand for data

The Statistical Institute of Jamaica receives data from several sources including the following entities:

Several other public and private entities provide the Institute with administrative data. This data is kept in the strictest confidence and is protected under the Statistics Act of 1984.
